The evolving landscape of backlink building
It is widely known that generating links to your site is an important activity to increase your site’s ranking in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). As more and more people got wise to this, a number of automated tools and services were created to generate backlinks – and of course, many of these still exist today. Do they work?
Increasingly, search engines are looking to discount the value of automated links and give extra weighting to higher quality, organic links. This has been highlighted by the release of Google’s Panda updgrade earlier this year. The SEO industry has addressed this by moving towards Link Pyramids - these are the hottest and most powerful way to drive your website to the top of the SERPs.
What is a Link Pyramid?
A Link Pyramid disguises the automation of backlinks by creating a tiered structure that pushes link juice through to your website, blog or money page without solely creating direct links. In other words, it creates a series of links pointing to your backlinks, as the diagram below shows:
Tier 1 links point directly to your site while Tier 2 links point to the Tier 1 links and Tier 3 links point to the Tier 2 links. This means that you are pouring link juice through to the links that are pointing to your website and therefore, showing Google and other search engines how many important and valuable links are pointing directly to your website. In short, Link Pyramids create a high authority for your direct backlinks and gives them a high weighting with the search engines as well as making the links look entirely natural to the search engines – and Link Pyramids work like a dream.
What’s the problem with Link Pyramids?
There is nothing fundamentally wrong with Link Pyramids other than they are very time consuming. Given this, you either have to invest a lot of time yourself or outsource the process. For most of this year, I have been using the Smarter Submit outsource service for building Link Pyramids. Actually, this site is ranking #1 on Google and other SEs for several specific keywords. It is not our intention for this to be a high traffic site as we only want to attract visitors who are making very specific searches.

Yes, that’s exactly what is happening. In fact, we have also been trying out using the link pyramid with another layer – i.e. rather than pointing the link pyramid directly at our money sites we have been pointing them at our high authority links such as articles and web 2.0 properties and this is proving even more powerful. Once the results can be quantified we’ll let you know the tool we are using.
